Global LEGO Building Event: Children from 35 Nations build a World of LEGO Bricks

The grand finale of the global LEGO building event took place in LEGOLAND Billund, Denmark over one weekend in October 2008. Thirty-five children from all over the world created a world map of LEGO bricks together. Before arriving, all participants qualified for the LEGO building contests in their home countries. The German participant, Frederik Seliger from Cologne, won the German competition in LEGOLAND Germany in Günzburg in September. His prize was the journey to the finale at LEGOLAND Billund with his family.

50th Birthday of the LEGO Brick

The 50th birthday of the LEGO brick was in January 2008 and there was plenty to celebrate. Children all over the world have played with LEGO bricks for the past 50 years, and LEGO is still right at the top of many wish lists – just as it always has been. Industry and trade associations also recognize the LEGO success. Just before the turn of the millennium the LEGO brick was voted “Toy of the Century”, one of the highest awards in the toy industry, by both Fortune Magazine in the US and the British Association of Toy Retailers.
