TWEENS: THE GOLDEN AGE OF CHILDHOOD

 • Diligent self in athletic body– from learning to tame the “wild” child within to being at ease in the world of school and family.
• Solid bonds and new friendships – from bonding with family and friends to forming new friendships around hobbies and areas of interest.
• Concrete operational thinking — from understanding that the world is more complex than initially thought, to exploring concretely and systematically how things could be.
• The golden age of adventures — from making things up to making things work, from free play to rule-based games.

  What to expect?
 Tweens are usually pretty “happy campers,” both at home and in school. Curious, and engaged, playful and industrious – puberty has not hit too hard yet! 9-11 year olds are many teachers’ favourites. High levels of achievement and new friendships await these veterans of childhood. Tweens are at the verge of being formal thinkers, but they are not too much “in their own worlds” or “in their own heads”: Still pragmatic, resilient, and willing to play. In order to progress in life they will try to gain mastery over skills such as negotiating relationships with peers and managing different perspectives on the same matter. In the process they will also understand the importance of self-discipline and the necessity of "hard" fun like homework etc.
