Robots and LEGO bricks invade the classroom!

Robots and LEGO bricks invade the classroom!

The robots are coming! They’re turning up everywhere, and people with an eye to the future are speaking about robots and exploring what they can be used for. So robot projects are becoming an established feature of school life – especially in the US.

In August 2006 MINDSTORMS NXT was launched as a classroom product offered through LEGO Education. MINDSTORMS is used in classrooms, for example, for projects dealing with irrigation or energy measurement. The new version of robots has been launched in Europe and Asia, and software and teaching materials are gradually appearing in local languages.

Activities in LEGO Education are spread over three areas:
1. Products for kindergartens and schools.
2. LEGO Education Centers – of which there are more than 140 in Asia and Australia. The first American centre opened in September in Dallas, Texas. Education Centers offer activities for children after school.
3. Competition‑style activities: FIRST LEGO League and World Robot Olympics.
